About Us

DR. CHARLES ELMORE

FOUNDER OF

AKI ELMORE RYU-JUI-JITSU

Dr. Charles Elmore began his study of the martial arts in 1947, at the age of 27.  His first instuctor was Elliott Farrell.  Mr. Farrell was one of the first black men in Judo.  He was the first American black man to receive a Black Belt in Judo.  After studying with Mr. Farrell, Dr. Elmore was introduced to a German Jui-Jitsu instructor whose dojo was located at 86th Street, New York City.  During his time of studying in this dojo, Dr. Elmore was further introduced to a different way of instructing. The German began teaching their students to throw from the left as opposed to the Japanese, who begin on the right side.

Dr. Elmore has been a teacher and student of the martial arts for over fifty (50) years.  He has studied with some of the best martial artists in America.  They include George Ito, Senseis, Shena, Matsumura, Yamada and Mr. Farrell.  Dr. Elmore has also studied Judo, Jui Jitsu and Aikido.  Some of Dr. Elmore's students include, Kiyoshi Shina, Ivan Villegas.  Cleophus Jacobs, James Cheatham, Charles Sparrow, John Sist and Sheldon "Shelly" Gelfand.

Dr. Elmore at the age of 77 no longer considers himself a teacher, but he is a "polisher".
